HURRICANE KATRINA "We feel like we’re in the middle of a cultural diaspora." "This is not only going to take days and weeks and months, but we’ll be looking at recovery of some of these areas for years." "Although nearly $52 billion was recently allocated by Congress for shelter, food and medical care, none of it was designated for arts recovery." "Along the coast, other arts organizations are feeling the impact, even if physical damage was minimal." Katrina, the moniker of a Hurricane that made landfall in America’s Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, is now and will remain etched in our lives. One of the most destructive tropical cyclones to hit our nation, she continues to impact our hearts and call to the depths of our humanness. As a means to bring relief to the Big Easy and her neighboring cultural communities, many local nonprofit arts and culture organizations are either hosting or supporting efforts to raise funds, collecting goods, and providing information on the status of cultural leaders and assets. The Cultural Alliance is pleased to have the forum to share this information with you.
While devastation can occur in an instant, recovery is a process that requires recurrent efforts. As a means of helping you to continue helping others, we will post and update this page with related information throughout the year.
