The long-term goals of arts and cultural institutions are more attainable when we work together. Culture is a critical strategic asset to the Greater Philadelphia region’s economic, educational, and social development.

The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance is committed to working with members and cultural advocates to ensure our sector remains a recognized and valued resource and economic engine for the region.

Meeting Decision Makers

Establishing relationships with the region’s decision makers is an important element of a successful cultural sector. The Cultural Alliance is uniquely able to forge ties for the cultural community as a whole, providing opportunities to meet and exchange information and ideas with legislators, other government officials, and civic leaders.

Advocacy presents a critical opportunity to promote the strength and impact of the cultural sector, while familiarizing decision makers with the impact and value of culture to the community. The Cultural Alliance organizes regular trips to Harrisburg and Washington, DC for advocates to meet and share concerns with their state and federal elected officials. During these meetings, participants speak about issues impacting the entire cultural sector, including funding for local, state and national arts agencies, and issues affecting individual organizations.

Elected officials can assist arts and culture organizations with a variety of issues including legislation, zoning, government funding, and support for government grant applications. Cultural Alliance staff members are available to arrange meetings for members at the local offices of their City Council members, County Commissioners, State Senators and Representatives, and United States Senators and Representatives, on an as-needed basis.

To take part in advocacy trips or to receive assistance or guidance in scheduling a meeting with your elected representatives, please contact the Advocacy Department at (215) 557-7811, ext. 11, or e-mail April Williamson.

Advocacy Alerts

As issues affecting the nonprofit arts and cultural sector arise in government, the Cultural Alliance informs cultural advocates of the need for action and what steps to take through periodic Advocacy Alerts. Alerts contain background information about the issue at hand, the current status of legislation or other events, and suggested steps for taking action. Due to their timely nature, alerts are most often distributed via e-mail. You can also check the status of advocacy issues and read alerts here.

Research

To make the case for support of arts and culture, the industry depends on research detailing its impact in a variety of areas including the economy, education, public health, and community revitalization and development. The Cultural Alliance collects and disseminates research in these areas, as well as more specific issues pertaining to cultural organizations and their work. Research collected at the Cultural Alliance is available free of charge to member organizations.

To request research reports, peruse information, or for assistance in finding information about issues of concern to your organization, please contact the Research Department, (215) 557-7811, ext.14, or email Nicholas Crosson.

Community Planning

Communities throughout the region are increasingly looking to culture as a key component of revitalization, growth, and development. The Cultural Alliance can help your town establish a local arts agency, create an arts district, and assist efforts to develop new spaces for a variety of cultural activities. We can help you reach community planners and decision-makers in your area, coordinate meetings and planning activities, and communicate your needs and interests to other stakeholders.

The Cultural Alliance’s community outreach team is available to meet with your constituents to help define your objectives, and provide you with the customized tools and information you need to achieve your cultural community planning goals. We can also provide research pertaining to development issues directly affecting your interests, as well as many examples of successful, culturally-based community planning efforts nationwide.

To schedule a presentation and discussion for your constituents, or to request assistance with community planning, please contact our outreach staff at (215) 654-0676 or e-mail Nancy DeLucia.

The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance’s cultural policy activities are supported by a grant from the William Penn Foundation.
