Local Philadelphia Inquirer | 11/18/2005 | Verna to shut Councilman Cohen’s Office Council President Anna Verna is closing Councilman Cohen’s office on December 31, 2005, due to the salary expense of supporting eight staffers that no longer support a member of Council. F.Y.I. For those of you wondering about Councilman Cohen’s seat -- Council President Verna has yet to decide when to have voters fill that vacancy. Her current options are: (1) Have the seat remain vacant until it comes up in 2007 (2) Have a special election prior to the May 2006 primary or (3) Include the seat in the May 2006 primary. The middle option seems the least likely as it is expensive to hold a special election and it is not Philadelphia tradition to hold special elections for Council seats.
