Public Speaking & Delivering Testimony

Get Organized—Look at the Big Picture

Define goals and objectives. Work with the Cultural Alliance to identify the desired outcomes: better legislation, more or different funding, broader audiences, stronger education. The voice of the cultural community will be stronger if conveyed through a unified message.

Based on your goals, assess the climate you are working in. Identify factors such as current and potential legislation, politics, economy, public opinion, and legislators’ opinions and priorities that may stand as barriers to or nourishment for your goals. Appeal to both your supporters and your opposition.

Identify the tasks necessary to achieve your goals and who may play key roles in achieving them. You should identify committees, volunteers, fundraising channels, and coordination with other advocacy efforts.

Develop a plan for the communication of your message. Make sure that you yourself understand the message, that the message is clear, concise, decisive, and understandable, and tailor your presentation to the target audience.

Develop a schedule of activities and monitor progress. People can be more effective if realistic deadlines are determined and met.

Keep a record of your work. This will help you evaluate results and help you work more efficiently in the future. Record presentations and research to help you create future presentations without "re-inventing the wheel." Doing so will also provide examples for new advocates. Sample letters and testimony can be found on this site to give you ideas to get started.
