Donors' belt-tightening squeezes grantees

(May 11, 2009) - Deep into the recession, regional grant-makers are pruning operations, putting holds on programs
and projects, and fleshing out scenarios that range from the doomsday to the merely chastened.

"We know everyone is going to take a hit in this economy," said Tom Kaiden, chief operating
officer of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. "We're not saying arts and culture
shouldn't take a hit. For the most part, foundations understand that in a civil society, citizens
should not be forced to choose between food for the body and food for the mind. . . . We think
that's a simplistic choice."
