Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What is the Portfolio?

The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance 2006 Portfolio is a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the non-profit arts and cultural sector of the 5 county Greater Philadelphia area (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties).

  2. Why is the Portfolio important?

Up until now though, we've only understood the specific metrics of our field and its impact intuitively or from multiple resources. Given the importance of this asset to our collective futures, we have a moral and fiduciary responsibility to manage it wisely. But we cannot manage what we do not first measure. The Portfolio is a specific, measurable report on the health, strengths and weaknesses of Philadelphia's cultural sector, and as such, is an important new step in our ongoing efforts to support the local cultural sector.

  3. How was the data collected?

The Pennsylvania Cultural Data Project (PACDP), a statewide data collection project for Pennsylvania's cultural organizations, provided the data used for this report.

Any interpretation of the data in the Portfolio is solely the view of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and does not reflect the views of the PACDP or its Governing Group.

For more information on the PACDP, please visit their website.

  4. What organizations are included?

The Portfolio includes information on 218 non-profit cultural organizations that completed a Data Profile (the form used for collecting financial and other operational information.). Among the organizations included are organizations of all sizes and in all cultural areas (Visual Arts, Music, Performing Arts, Science and Nature, Performing Arts, and other categories). The complete list of participating organizations is available at www.philaculture.org/portfolio.

  5. Does the Portfolio cover all non-profit cultural activity in the 5 County Greater Philadelphia area?

No, it does not. However, in preparing this report, particular emphasis was placed on obtaining data from a representative sample, including the very largest cultural organizations, to ensure that overall totals for financial information include the major economic engines of the sector. As a result, only a handful of Large or Very Large organizations are missing from the data set.

Three quarters of the organizations in the Portfolio are located in Philadelphia County and the 218 total organizations generate an estimated 70% of the revenue of the local non-profit cultural sector.

  6. Is information on specific cultural organizations data in the report available?

All data on individual organizations are strictly confidential, and no information is presented except in aggregated form.

  7. How was the data analyzed and from what time period?

To compile the 2006 Portfolio, the Cultural Alliance contracted the Southeastern Division of the Pennsylvania Economy League (PEL) to analyze PACDP data collected before December 2005. The figures presented in this report are for the most recent fiscal year available for each organization, in most cases FY2004 or FY2003. Any interpretation of the analysis done by PEL is solely the view of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and does not reflect the views of Pennsylvania Economy League.
