Cutting out the Middle Man: From Fiscal Sponsorship to Direct Management - May 17

May 17, 2013 - 9:30am

Fiscal sponsorship has long been a solution to provide individual artists and unorganized projects access to tax-exempt status so they can raise funds. There is another approach—Comprehensive Fiscal Sponsorship (CFS)—that can provide not just artists but also organizations more efficient, affordable, and permanent management resources—accounting, compliance, insurances, contracting, project management, and more. Join us to learn about this approach and how it might benefit you.

Co-presented by CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance

Fiscal sponsorship has long been a solution to provide individual artists and unorganized projects access to tax-exempt status so they can raise funds. This approach has been made popular by such organizations as Fractured Atlas and NYFA. In this model, funds pass through the sponsor to the project leaders, leaving them with substantial administrative tasks and liabilities.

There is another approach—Comprehensive Fiscal Sponsorship (CFS)—that can provide not just artists but also organizations more efficient, affordable, and permanent management resources—accounting, compliance, insurances, contracting, project management, and more. As the cultural sector works to increase efficiency and maintain (or increase) the impact of its work in the face of thinner resources, there is renewed interest in this approach as a means to help accomplish the goals of the sector.

This session will introduce CFS and explore how it can provide to the Greater Philadelphia cultural community a resource for individual artists and organizations to adapt to the New Economy. Our discussion will explore this approach, the related research performed and unique CFS solution developed by CultureWorks, and gather further input on the needs and issues of our creative colleagues.

Light breakfast will be provided.
