Story Bank

Welcome to the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance Story Bank.  Making mosaics, listening to live music, reaching out to a neighbor --  these stories tell tales of moments when art came alive.

We want to hear from you about how arts and culture matter to you.  What sparks your creativity?  Who is your cultural role model? If arts and culture has had an impact on you, tell us about it.

For questions about the Story Bank, please contact  Jessica Eldredge at jessicae@philaculture.org

We look forward to hearing from you!

I work in the arts, and live with my family in the Washington DC area. My 7-year old is a pretty good little hockey player, and we were up in Philly for a tournament over Memorial Day weekend.

I read history books. No, I devour them. Most novels I read are historical novels.

My father was a visual artist, poet, musician, and stay-at-home parent for the first ten years of my life. He was also a humanitarian who never missed an opportunity to impress upon me the importance of helping others.

One of the things I like most about being a parent is that kids force you to live in the moment, and you don’t have time to worry about how well you’re doing it.

I bought this huge canvas 2 years ago at a Goodwill store for $10. It was so large that I had a friend with a truck come and pick it up.

I’m a recovering props mistress turned theme enthusiast who has a penchant for cooking. Which means that I like to create personally themed, sculpture like treats for my friends and special occasions.

I am obsessed with the past, and the technology of my childhood, even the technology of my parents' childhood. This plays out in many fun, pointless and time-consuming hobbies, with one of my favorites being the collection of discarded old home movies, the old 8mm films.

After taking drawing, painting and ceramics classes in high school and college, I had largely abandoned that outlet until my children were toddlers.

My mom is a music teacher so as you can probably imagine, growing up I was strongly encouraged to partake in several forms of creative practice.

I live a hyphenated life. I am an artist-administrator, and in my art, I am a jazz singer-songwriter. Unlike the way it sounds, being a hyphenate is more than two-dimensional.
