Pennsylvania Governor’s Arts Awards 2014

Get ready for a day that honors the arts! The Pennsylvania Governor’s Arts Awards return this Sunday, September 28 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and this year’s Distinguished Arts Award will be given to Philadelphia composer, Jennifer Higdon! will feature a special exhibit of Indiana area award-winning youth art. The artwork will be featured as part of the Governor’s Arts Awards.

 

Indiana will be the Cultural Capital of the Commonwealth on Sunday, September 28, as the town and campus join in hosting a public celebration of all things arts. Throughout the afternoon several professional artists, galleries and playhouses will open their doors to the public for self-guided tours. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to view specially curated exhibits from Pennsylvania artists at the IUP Performing Arts Center, including visual artwork from 35 k-12 art students in the Indiana area, who were recognized in May in the Indiana Arts Council’s 7th annual Youth Arts Celebration.

The award ceremony will run from 4-5:30pm, where Governor Tom Corbett and First Lady Susan Corbett who also chairs the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, will pay tribute to the 2014 recipients of the Commonwealth’s highest arts honors. Recipients include:  Philadelphia Composer Jennifer Higdon who will receive the Distinguished Arts Award, The Andy Warhol Museum which will receive the Arts Innovation Award, Pittsburgh painter, Robert Qualters who was named Artist of the year,  Indiana’s Myrom Hay Tomb Esq. who will receive the Arts Leadership and Service Award and Mark Pasquerilla from Johnstown who will receive the Arts Patron Award.

Be sure to check out the complete activities schedule, including open studios in Indiana County, open houses at cultural venues in downtown Indiana, a bandstand and exhibits on the IUP campus, and a public reception after the awards event. All activities are free.
