Peggy Amsterdam Honored Posthumously

The Cultural Alliance is both honored and touched that our late President, Peggy Amsterdam, continues to be recognized for her contributions to the field and to our region. Tributes include:

On January 28, the City of Philadelphia issued a Proclamation to the Amsterdam Family which recognized Peggy's work, honors, and volunteer activities while serving at the helm of the Cultural Alliance. Councilman Frank DiCicco cited Peggy for establishing "a new direction for the Alliance by using the cultural community as a unifying force..."

On April 27, the PNC Foundation announced the PNC Arts Alive Award for Arts Innovation in honor of Peggy Amsterdam at the Arts & Business Council Awards Luncheon. This award will be presented for the first time at the 2011 luncheon in partnership with the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia.  It will recognize a visual and/or performing arts group that expands and engages audiences in new ways. Details on the award, eligibility and nomination process will be available on the Arts and Business Council and PNC Arts Alive websites this Fall.

On May 7, The Wilma Theatre will honor Peggy's memory at their 2010 Gala. Mayor Michael Nutter will be presenting Peggy’s award, which will be accepted on behalf of the Amsterdam family and the Cultural Alliance by Alliance staff members Nancy DeLucia and Julie Goodman Hawkins.

On May 20, Peggy will be granted an Honorary Degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Arts at their 132nd Commencement at the Academy of Music.  Board Chair Hal Real will accept the award on her behalf.

In addition to these honors, Peggy will also be remembered through commemorative teams participating in two upcoming events. The staff of the Cultural Alliance will participate in the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby on May 22 as “Team Pamsterdam”, honoring her work with an arts advocacy themed entry. On September 12, “Team Peggy” is participating in the Dana Farber Jimmy Fund Walk in Boston to support cancer research. If you would like to either participate or donate, you can find information here.

Peggy's many supporters, family, and friends have also honored her legacy through generous contributions to the Cultural Alliance's Peggy Amsterdam Memorial Advocacy Fund.  To make a gift or learn more about the Fund, visit /contribute/donate/peggy.
