PEACE DAY PHILLY 2014

In honor of International Peace Day, Sonia Sanchez, famed poet, playwright, and activist, Sonia Sanchez is hosting Footprints of Peace, a celebration of peace to be held this Sunday, September 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Penn Museum.

 

What are you doing to honor International Peace Day this Sunday? Sonia Sanchez wants you to join her during Peace Day Philly 2014, a transformative day designed for the entire city. Artists, musicians, poets and other activist are scheduled to perform and speak during the day-long event.  

Sanchez has fostered a day that is sure to uplift and inspire. Spoken-word artist Black Ice, Broadway actress Vinie Burrows, actor and singer TC Carson, and Harrisburg poet laureate Rick Kearns will each perform throughout the day Additionally, in the afternoon Arts Holding Handing and Hearts (AHHAH), will host a poetry-writing workshop, where they will use newspaper headlines to construct their own poems.

“Art and poetry is so powerful because what it does, it speaks to the heart, it speaks to the emotions," said Jan Michener, Executive Director of AHHAH. "When we speak from the heart, that's the only way peace will happen."

Other activities include, the unveiling of a new City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program Peace Bench for a community location and the presentation of a Peace Warriors certificate

Tickets are $10 for the general public and free for STAMP card holders, children 5 and under, and Penn Museum members. To learn more about Footprints of peace click here.
