COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Community Education Center

Learn more about neighborhoods and communities that make the city a great place to work and play!

Community Education Center (CEC) is a nonprofit performing arts center and artists incubator space located in the Powelton Village section of West Philadelphia. Incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1973, the CEC was founded by local community members to promote shared experiences. The Center is known and respected by artists and audiences alike for its support of the local arts community and its presentations of outstanding dance and performance

As an arts community center, CEC  provides rehearsal, audition, workshop, and performance space for a broad cross-section of artists, from aspiring commercial dancers, models and musicians, to up and coming modern dance choreographers, to some of the cities best-known and celebrated artists. CEC also offers the community a chance to explore their creativity through classes in the performing arts as well as performance opportunities. The organization also has an Artist in Residency program. The current cycle boasts two prominent artists, Lela Aisha Jones and Lauren Putty White, both of whom are committed to teaching youth the importance of dance and movement.

It is the performing arts that have served as the common thread to bring the area’s diverse population together. Young and old generations come through the doors of CEC to create art that is displayed throughout their neighborhoods and the city of Philadelphia.

Returning to CEC is the  DanceAfrica Philadelphia program. CEC partnered with Drexel University to bring this renowned festival of African dance, culture and community building to the city in November. Check out the full calendar of events here, if you have any questions about one of the events you can email cec@cecarts.org for details.
