Philly’s Got Talent

Calling all musicians, today is the day to show Philly you’ve got talent!

Last week, Councilman-at-large David Oh announced the launch of PHL Live Center Stage, a citywide music festival and competition designed to highlight and give exposure to Philadelphia’s local artists.

Starting today and running through September 30, candidates can submit their music online in 10 categories: classical, country/folk, hip-hop/rap, jazz, world, pop/dance, R&B, rock, gospel and DJ.

From the submissions, judges will  choose up to five artists in each category to advance to a second round, which will take place in October in various venues around the city, including Hard Rock Café, Milkboy, Time, Underground Arts, Warmdaddy’s and World Café Live. Most venues will charge a nominal $3 for tickets, with proceeds going to the artists.

Winners of each genre will be announced during the final showcase in December  and will receive awards such as cash prizes, studio time, and free consultation with an entertainment lawyer. A People's Choice award will also be given, based on fan favorites, voted on by the audience members using the app Decibly

Councilman Oh said he “hopes PHL Live shines a light on not only established local acts but also on breakout stars who otherwise would not have the resources to showcase their talents.” The festival has the genre diversity of Lollapalooza and the audience participation of American Idol, with a much smaller budget!

Philly boasts a long list of music legends, hopefully this competition will put someone else on the map.  Think you’re the next Teddy Pendergrass, Phyllis Hyman, Will Smith, or Pink? Get your song selections ready and enter the contest on today!
