Opera on the Mall Brings Opera to the People

On Saturday, September 28, Opera Philadelphia will treat thousands of Philadelphians to a free, open-air broadcast of Verdi’s landmark opera Nabucco at Independence National Historical Park, marking the third year of Opera on the Mall.

The season-opening performance will be broadcast in high definition to a giant outdoor screen. Verdi’s epic tale of liberation feels right at home in the shadow of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

Opera Philadelphia gained national recognition for its participation in John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s “Random Acts of Culture” Initiative and has been a leader in breaking down perceived boundaries and presenting opera outside the traditional opera house. For Opera on the Mall, families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and blankets, and kids can get Nabucco crowns made from balloons.  Food truck vendors will be serving refreshments nearby, and boxed lunches are available for pre-order.
