Ceramics Instructor and Studio Manager

Delaware Art Museum is currently seeking an experienced ceramics artist to oversee and manage the Ceramics Studio in the Bank of America Education Wing. The Instructor is to teach Tuesday morning/evening adult ceramic classes beginning in January 2018 and Studio Managerial duties beginning Sept 2017. Periodic workshops will also be a possible teaching opportunity.

 

This position will provide quality instruction for a range of skill levels, cultivate a community of learners, and promote a positive and supportive learning environment.  The Instructor will work with the Studio Programs Manager to design informative and fun adult classes for those interested in both wheel throwing and hand building. Classes are eight to ten weeks long and meet once a week for three hours. In addition to studio duties and classes, Saturday availability for Open Studios from 9:30am-12:30pm is preferable but not mandatory.

 

This is a part time position.  The hourly rate for teaching/instruction is $25 - $35 depending on enrollment.  The hourly rate for studio technician duties is $15.

Qualifications

BFA/BA from an accredited college/university or demonstrated success as a teaching artist. 
Prior teaching experience in an educational setting or informal learning environment.
Demonstrated proficiency in his/her field.
Knowledge of various techniques and processes.
Experience with studio maintenance and safety.
Ability to work with a wide-range of skill levels, personalities, and backgrounds and modify teaching strategies to optimize learning.
Good time management and organizational skills.
Enthusiasm for teaching.
Eager to experiment and try new things.

Job Duties

Teach adults of various skill levels and backgrounds
Maintain a strong sense of community and open dialogue with students
Maintain a clean and orderly studio (1-2 hours per week)
Mix glazes when needed
Inventory and order supplies, including clay, tools, and chemicals. Receive and put away order (must be able to lift 50 pounds)
Load and fire kilns (1-2 firings/week, 2 electric L&L kilns)
Reclaim/Pug recycle clay (1-2 hours per week)
