Assistant Manager-Retail Violin Shop

Vintage Instruments, Inc./ Frederick W. Oster Fine Violins seeks a full time Assistant Manager. We are looking for a violinist or violist with administrative skills and aptitude, who enjoys working in a small business environment, and has a sense of humor. The shop, founded in 1974, is an eclectic Center City retail business specializing in the sale, appraisal, and repair of fine violins, as well as vintage acoustic fretted instruments. The Assistant Manager will work with us to manage general office duties and assist with retail shop activities. We are looking for a person interested in participating in a collaborative approach to outreach, problem solving and developing new ideas.

Daily tasks and special responsibilities include:

  • greeting clients, coordinating and assisting with their needs
  • preparing written correspondence, appraisals and other typed/written materials
  • retail assistance to customers purchasing strings, accessories, cases and instruments
  • managing telephone calls
  • monitoring supplies & accessories inventory, and placing orders for items needed
  • reviewing and answering emails
  • working in Microsoft Access database to catalogue inventory
  • coordinating appointments and repair projects with our workshop.
  • packing and unpacking shipments
  • participating in the creative development and production of outreach materials
  • social media posts, Constant Contact campaigns, and Instagram posts
  • coordinating with our part time staffer to make sure that everyday tasks are managed

Computer proficiency is a necessity. A working knowledge of specific computer programs including WordPerfect, Microsoft Access and Paint Shop Pro is helpful. There is no accounting work associated with this job. Applicants should be organized and have good verbal and written communication skills. A person who can work with our clients and staff enthusiastically, contributing ideas and carrying out the responsibilities of administering office duties is encouraged to apply. College level education or equivalent is preferred. We would be especially intrigued by someone with hands on object experience - such as former auction house personnel or museum staff.
