Librarian & Archivist (Part-Time)

This position will manage,develop and preserve Mt. Cuba Center’s Library and Archive Collections. The Librarian & Archivist utilizes collection resources to serve the information needs of Mt. Cuba Center and facilitate the preservation and utilization of non-living collections. This position will purchase materials, compile records, sort, shelve, issue, and receive library materials such as books, electronic media, pictures, and other digital documents of value. Additionally, this position will perform archival duties to preserve non-living collections of value.

Essential Functions:

Manage Library Circulation Activities

Lend, reserve, and collect books, periodicals, videotapes, pictures, digital assets, and other materials at circulation desk and process materials for loans; Maintain records of items received, stored, issued, and returned and file catalog cards according to system used; Sort books, publications, and other items according to established procedure and return them to shelves, files, or other designated storage areas

Provide intellectual stewardship for collections by working closely with staff, volunteers, students, vendors, and consortia partners; Locate library materials for users; Answer routine inquiries and refer users in need of professional assistance to appropriate resources or answers; Instruct users on how to utilize reference sources, catalogs, and automated information systems pertaining to the library

Perform Archivist Duties

Appraise, edit, and direct safekeeping of permanent records and historically valuable documents and assets; Participate in research activities based on archival materials; Create and maintain accessible, retrievable computer archives and databases, incorporating current advances in electronic information storage technology

Monitor non-living collections and determine appropriate preservation priorities and actions to ensure long-term storage and security; Organize and oversee the work of outside contractors performing preservation duties.

Special Collections Management

Analyze user requests to develop and build collections in support of the organization’s mission, strategic initiatives, and collections priority; Code, classify, and catalog collections based on subject matter or standard classification systems

Implement and work with databases and information systems to catalogue and access information

Create and execute policies, budgets, plans and resource allocation in consultation with Director of Collections & Conservation Lead

Support Guest and Organizational Programs

Provide knowledge and guidance to support guest and organizational initiatives related to profession

Lead, guide and train employees, interns and volunteers performing related work

Carry out other such duties as may be assigned or requested. Contribute to MCC activities as required. Actively participate as a member of Mt. Cuba Center’s community

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or related field and 2 years’ experience in special library function or equivalent experience

Working knowledge of copyright law and industry regulatory standards

Exceptional written communication and organizational skills

Familiarity with: Records management (best practices and workflows) in addition to Archival collections (best practices, platforms and workflows)

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively and persuasively communicate with the staff and the public

Ability to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs to complete work duties

Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details, and the ability to manage time and effectively function without close supervision

Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as needed

Physical requirements: ability to independently lift 35 lbs.

Please note this is a part time, seasonal position working under 1,000 hours per year.
