Communications and Events Manager

Independence Public Media Foundation (IPMF) is a new private foundation, created when WYBE/ MIND TV, an alternative public TV station (Channel 35 in Philadelphia), relinquished its broadcast license and received a one-time payment of $131.5 million through the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Broadcast Incentive Auction in 2017. Since then, the foundation has undertaken a strategic planning process and hired its first president. We are now ready to hire our first Communications and Events Manager.

The ideal Communications and Events Manager will spotlight and support the work of the foundation’s grantees and partners, focusing on collaboration, community accessibility, and responsiveness. S/he must be flexible, easily adapting to new and changing situations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and lead communications strategies for the foundation that best support the foundation’s mission and goals
  • Support grantees and partners by co-creating compelling stories about their work
  • Provide communications training, support, and resources for grantees
  • Create opportunities to help support network building and peer-to-peer learning among foundation grantees and partners
  • Engage and inspire the foundation board about the work of grantees; foster their understanding of the individual and collective work of grantees and partners
  • Lead foundation branding efforts, including website and establishing wide and inclusive social media presence
  • Assist with organizing and publicizing special events and projects that advance the foundation’s goals
  • Coordinate work with videographers, photographers, filmmakers, journalists, and others, as needed
  • Assist with writing/editing articles, talks, presentations, and opinion pieces
  • Develop internal and external correspondence, press releases, and media advisories, as well as partnerships with area media outlets

The Communications and Events Manager will report to the President, working to further define and advance the broad strategic goals set by the Board.  

 

Who You Are:

  • You have five or more years of related communications experience; philanthropic and social justice passion and experience are a plus
  • You have knowledge of Philadelphia and its neighborhoods and a general appreciation for the power of media to connect people and improve their lives
  • You have excellent listening and communication skills to hear and convey strategic thinking, interesting ideas, and captivating stories
  • You have excellent written communication skills, with superior writing and editing ability, as well as proficiency with social media
  • You have a strong appreciation for media-making and media impact as it relates to social and economic power
  • You have an interest in and willingness to travel, primarily within the greater Philadelphia area (e.g. site visits with prospective and current grantees, after-hours events/meetings)
  • You are comfortable operating in a start-up environment and contributing to building communications’ systems and processes
  • You are accustomed to successfully meeting multiple deadlines
  • You are creative, collaborative, and curious
  • You are dependable and driven, with a strong work ethic and personal integrity
  • You have some desktop publishing/graphic design experience
  • You are independent, and a self-starter, but enjoy working on a small team
  • You are highly organized, a good writer, a clear communicator, and you are very detail oriented

 

Salary is in the range of $60K to $75K and includes a generous benefits package. The foundation operates from a temporary WeWork office in Center City and is currently seeking permanent office space in Philadelphia. There may be some opportunity for remote work.
