ART EDUCATION PROJECT MANAGER/CURATOR

As a member of Mural Arts’ management team, he or she will be able to articulate goals and create strategies that serve not only departmental objectives, but also the mission of the organization, and build and maintain effective relationships among staff, artists, funders, and community partners.  

The Project Manager/Curator will have the skills required to engage and inspire youth aged 10 to 22 through the visual arts. This person will be dedicated to expanding youth opportunities that will empower them to share their voice, contribute to their communities and develop as leaders. 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Project Manager/Curator will organize, manage, and plan complex projects for the organization’s art and art development product implementation efforts.  Part of the role of curator he/she will oversee the cultural specimen collections of the organization, conduct research programs, and direct related activities of the institution.

  • Create dynamic, innovative quality art projects in collaboration with the MAP leadership, teaching artists, contracted artists and students. 
  • Ensure that projects are integrated into the project based learning curriculum.
  • Connect with contemporary art scene locally, nationally and internationally 
  • Generate a pool of artists to source for projects.
  • Identify, initiate, and pursue new programmatic and project opportunities 
  • Oversee the budget management of the art education projects.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Mural Arts’ partners.
  • Supervisory and mentoring responsibilities as appropriate. 
  • Facilitate production of all art education projects
  • Create and monitor project timelines.
  • Coordinate community outreach and events, including community meetings, paint days, and dedications.
  • Formally present designs and describe projects to community stakeholders independently, and with artists.
  • Coordinate all art education project documentation, including images of final design, finished project, and written descriptions.  
  • Report project outcome to funders. 
  • Represent artist when artist is not available.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Suite or other related software.
  • A knowledge and background in public, contemporary art, and/or muralism preferred. 
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented environment, problem-solve, manage multiple tasks, and respond quickly to requests. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships and partnerships in multiple communities and contexts. 
  • Ability to work in diverse communities, multiple settings with respect and humility
  • High level of organization.
  • Aptitude to perform in confidential situations.
  • Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, data management, web/internet utilization. Graphic software experience a plus.
  • Update-to-date Child Abuse, FBI and Criminal clearances.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, such as evenings or weekends.
  • Plans and organizes the acquisition, storage, and exhibition of MAP collections.  
  • Researches, collects, and catalogs art for specific exhibits; selects themes and designs for the exhibit and develops or installs the materials.  
  • Writes and reviews a variety of scholarly works, including grant proposals, journal articles, institutional reports, and other publicity materials.
  • Develops, plans, and conducts research projects based on interest or expertise.
  • Negotiates and authorizes a collection’s purchase, sale, exchange, or loan.
  • Develops and oversees artist and artist projects. 
  • Acquaints individuals and artists with the MAP facilities and materials by designing, organizing, coordinating, planning, and conducting tours, workshops, or instructional or educational meetings.  
  • Provides lectures and other information to the public regarding the collection or portfolio. 
  • Promotes the use of the organization’s services, seeks financing, and maintains community alliances by actively attending meetings, conventions, and civic events. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year degree in arts administration, art education or equivalent experience and knowledge. Advanced degree preferred. 
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working with youth in communities of color and opportunity youth populations in an in school and/or out-of-school setting, including development of project-based curriculum and lesson plans. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • 75% prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • 25% On site management (Indoors/Outdoors)
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
