The Bloomberg Arts Internship program is an entry point cultural workforce development initiative of Bloomberg Philanthropies, designed and managed by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. Every year, the Cultural Alliance recruits a cohort of passionate and talented rising high school seniors from Philadelphia to take on real-world projects that support dozens of arts, culture, and heritage partner organizations across the region. Bloomberg interns provide vital capacity for special projects as well as general operating needs and are recruited and matched with worksites based on how well their skills and interests align with the mission and needs of our partners. In addition to their worksite experience, all interns attend a four-day pre-program orientation, weekly professional development workshops, as well as weekly cultural immersion activities with a diverse range of organizations.

This is a paid internship - with the program paying a living wage to all interns and stipends to support capacity at our worksite partners.

Bloomberg Arts Summer Internship

The worksite experience is the cornerstone of the internship program. Since 2015, more than 350 interns have filled important roles at more than 100 different organizations, working across departments to complete valuable projects. They have created and led tours, redesigned websites, managed social media campaigns, fabricated art installations, shot and edited promotional videos, and much, much more.

In 2022, the Cultural Alliance will look to place 60 interns in in-person or hybrid positions at organizations across Philadelphia beginning on Tuesday, June 28. Interns are available to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, seven hours a day. Work done outside of normal business hours (for special events, rehearsals, etc) can be scheduled on an as-needed basis, as well. Interns are provided with SEPTA passes, computers (as needed), and any other supplies or resources necessary to be successful in their positions. More importantly, interns attend weekly professional development workshops and work with a mentor throughout their time in the program to improve their workplace skills.

Following a week of orientation, the program will formally begin for worksites on Tuesday, June 28. Interns are available to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, seven hours a day. Work done outside of normal business hours (for special events, rehearsals, etc) can be scheduled on an as-needed basis, as well. This year, worksites may apply for two or more interns to work with their organizations. In the application process, interested organizations will need to provide a job description and work plan for interns. In addition, two supervisors (one primary, one backup) with up-to-date background checks and clearances will need to be selected as a primary point-of-contact for interns and the Cultural Alliance. Prior to beginning the program, supervisors will attend a worksite orientation to help them prepare to work with their interns and to review worksite expectations, important dates, and administrative processes. In addition, supervisors will be invited to attend bi-weekly informal meetings to get important program updates, discuss internship projects, and get support on challenges they're facing from peers.

Besides providing a unique and vital opportunity to an exceptional student, participating as a worksite partner can benefit your organization and our sector at large. Hosting Bloomberg interns can help your organization by...

  • Providing a leadership opportunity to junior employees by giving them a supervisory role in managing an intern
  • Encouraging diversity of thought — Bloomberg interns come from different backgrounds and offer fresh perspectives.
  • Participating in a collective effort to contribute to the future success of arts and culture in Philadelphia.

The Alliance provides a robust support system to our summer worksite partners:

  • $750 stipend per intern placed with a worksite
  • Dedicated program management staff to support worksites and supervisors
  • Comprehensive pre-program worksite orientation, DEI training, and networking opportunities
  • Management of intern employment paperwork and payroll
  • Program mentor visits to check-in on intern/worksite experience
  • Weekly professional development for interns to improve workplace skills

To apply, interested organizations should be prepared to...

  • Be able to place two or more interns
  • Identify two supervisors
  • Provide job descriptions and work plans

Vaccination requirement: Proof of vaccination is required for all interns. Worksites will be required to provide the details of their COVID protocols in their application.

Cultural Immersion

In addition to their worksite experience and professional development, Bloomberg Interns attend weekly cultural immersion activities on Mondays. During Cultural Immersions, interns have an opportunity get an inside look at how arts and culture organizations tick. Through conversations with staff and artists, interns learn about an organization's history, mission, and programming, as well as the educational and professional backgrounds of the people who make it all happen. Cultural Immersions can be in-person activities, as well as virtual engagements.  Cultural Immersion partners receive up to $1000 for their participation.

Bloomberg Arts School Year Internship 22-23

The School Year program, piloting now in the 21-22 academic year, provides select worksites and interns with the opportunity to continue their participation in the Bloomberg Arts Internship from September through June. The Cultural Alliance will seek to place seven interns in the 22-23 academic year. Interns may work up to 10 hours per week outside of school hours. Participating worksites receive a fee of $3500 per intern placed with their organizations. Like the summer internship, the Cultural Alliance manages intern payroll, provides for transportation needs, and can provide supplies and technology resources on an as-needed basis.

For the Cultural Alliance, there are two parallel objectives: provide summer interns with ongoing professional development through their senior year AND create a sustained resource for worksite partners. Though any organization that participates in the summer internship is eligible, this is an ideal resource for organizations with existing youth engagement programs that align with School Year's timeline and scope. Worksites and interns will be invited to apply in early July, with School Year internships formally beginning in mid-September.

If you would like to learn more about the Bloomberg Arts School Year Internship, email your questions to BAI@philaculture.org or attend one of our worksite info sessions this spring.

FAQ

How many interns can we work with?

We generally try to place at least two interns at each worksite. Whenever possible, we avoid placing just one intern at a worksite, because we have found that having a peer-colleague makes them more comfortable in their work. We occasionally make exceptions.

What type of work can Bloomberg interns do?

Bloomberg Arts Interns are selected and placed based on the needs of specific worksites. They have worked across organizations, supporting marketing, development, and programming. We discourage placing interns in “camp counselor” roles as much as possible, as this is less likely to fit the particular creative and professional interests of our interns.

How are interns placed with worksites?

Throughout their application and interview processes, interns are surveyed to assess their skills, interests, passions, and goals. We then match what we learn with the needs and mission of each worksite partners. Once we make a placement recommendation, worksites and interns are encouraged to schedule a pre-program meeting so that they can each confirm that the pairing is a good fit.

How many hours do interns work?

Interns should be at their worksites for 7-hours a day, not including breaks, and 21-hours a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Can interns work on days other than Tuesday through Thursday?

On Mondays and Fridays, interns attend additional programming, including cultural immersions and professional development workshops. However, if an intern has additional hours available, they can work on evenings and weekends. Please check with the Internship Manager before assigning work outside of regular business hours Tuesday-Thursday.

How are interns paid?

Bloomberg Interns are paid bi-weekly by the Cultural Alliance. To track hours, interns and supervisors fill out an online timesheet on a weekly basis.

Are there any requirements for being a supervisor?

Each worksite must assign two supervisors, and each supervisor is required to have up-to-date background checks and clearances for working with minors. The Cultural Alliance will pay for up to 2 background checks per worksite and can facilitate additional screenings at cost.

When are worksite stipends paid?

Summer internship worksite receives $750 per intern at the conclusion of the internship in August. To receive this stipend, worksite supervisors are required to submit project plans, attend the program orientation in June and final presentations in August, and complete all program evaluations and surveys.
