Communications Lead

About Fishtown Neighbors Association

The Fishtown Neighbors Association (FNA) is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization and the coordinating Registered Community Organization (RCO) for the Fishtown/19125 neighborhood of Philadelphia. Formed in 2001 by a dedicated group of neighborhood volunteers seeking to improve and unify the community, FNA has continued to serve the Fishtown area for over 20 years — bringing residents together through various events, providing opportunities for neighbors to voice their concerns on zoning and other topics, and serving as an important informational resource. Run entirely by volunteers, FNA works to ensure Fishtown is supported by the city of Philadelphia while preserving the neighborhood’s unique character and honoring our community’s shared vision for its future. We value diversity and inclusion and are committed to fostering a welcoming environment where neighbors of all ages and backgrounds can participate and develop a shared sense of identity.

About this position

FNA seeks a highly motivated and experienced Communications Lead to help manage our social media presence, promote our robust roster of events and activities, and support the Board with visual storytelling and other communications-related needs. This individual will work closely with the Communications Secretary to identify and execute digital/social media opportunities that will foster more engagement with our organization, increase event attendance and community awareness of FNA projects, and execute successful fundraising campaigns that will expand our monthly donor base.

Responsibilities

The Communications Lead will help FNA accomplish its goals via the following core areas:

Social Media Management (50%)

  • Assess FNA’s social media presence across our platforms and work with the Communications Secretary to develop strategies to amplify our various events and broaden general awareness amongst the community we serve
  • Create and post content for all of FNA’s social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter), ensuring all creative is aligned with FNA’s communications messaging goals, strategies, brand, and voice
  • Manage the day-to-day activity on FNA’s social media channels, including monitoring our DMs and comment sections and coordinating with Board members on how to respond in an appropriate and timely manner

Content Creation and Planning (25%)

  • Create a bank of templates and other communications assets that are versatile enough to repurpose for future events and other use cases
  • Develop a calendar for regularly posting on social media, ensuring that each FNA event receives at least three promotional posts per channel
  • Partner across the organization—with the communications, fundraising, and events committees—to develop compelling digital content (including copy, graphics, and videos) that supports and communicates the story of the FNA and our values
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and best practices, and be able to provide recommendations for new tactics and tools to better reach our audience
  • Assist with email newsletter communications, press releases, and other long-form written product

Fundraising Support (15%)

  • Work in close collaboration with FNA’s Fundraising Chair to expand our small-dollar fundraising program via recurring donor campaigns and creative online fundraising strategies
  • Establish materials for in-person events to help encourage neighbors to donate
  • Promote fundraising events and initiatives online and via other communication venues to get the word out about FNA

Data and Analytics (10%)

  • Track, monitor, and analyze communications metrics to periodically assess, inform, and sharpen FNA’s overall communications and fundraising strategy
  • Provide FNA Board members with regular updates and reports of what’s working, areas for improvement, and new opportunities to optimize our content and engagement tactics

Required Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of experience (whether as a staff member or consultant) in a digital strategy or marketing/communications role, preferably in nonprofit, public service, political/grassroots organizing, or other mission-driven sectors
  • Excellent writing and copyediting skills with experience in creating content for a wide range of audiences across different platforms, placements, and creative types
  • Strong graphic design skills and familiarity with Canva, including a knack for distilling complex ideas clearly and concisely through visuals
  • Experience creating content calendars, scheduling posts, and pulling metrics
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow a strict QA process, even when you or those who are approving your work are busy (you will be working with all volunteers!)
  • Working knowledge and comfort with Google Suite, including Docs and Sheets
  • A keen eye for following the latest digital trends about where people are getting their information online

Plus Qualifications

  • Experience with navigating competing interests, multiple stakeholders, conflicting rules, a range of possible solutions, and other complex elements or sensitive topics
