Mural Arts Philadelphia seeks a strategic and visionary Director of Communications and Brand Management to join its senior leadership team. This role is responsible for stewarding one of the most recognized public art brands in the world and ensuring Mural Arts’ mission is communicated with clarity, consistency, and impact across local, national, and global platforms.

Reporting to the Chief Advancement and Impact Officer, the Director plays a pivotal role in shaping organizational voice, advancing institutional reputation, and amplifying the reach of the nation’s largest public art program. The Director serves as both an internal leader and an external ambassador, positioning Mural Arts as a thought leader in the arts, culture, and public sectors.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Communications & Brand Leadership

  • Develop and implement Mural Arts’ overarching communications strategy in alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Partner with executive leadership to shape and articulate organizational voice, brand pillars, and executive communications.
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and alignment across all communications, marketing, and branding efforts.
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and institutional decision-making.

Content, Marketing & Public Engagement

  • Lead the creation of integrated, multi-platform campaigns that tell the story of Mural Arts’ programs and impact.
  • Oversee digital, print, and broadcast content that deepens audience engagement and broadens reach.
  • Use data and analytics to measure effectiveness and adapt strategies.

Public Relations & Media

  • Serve as a lead media contact and advisor to executive leadership on media strategy.
  • Manage consultants and media relationships to secure earned placements and thought-leadership opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain crisis communications protocols.

Events & Partnerships

  • Oversee the branding, promotion, and execution of public programs and events.
  • Leverage events as opportunities for visibility, storytelling, and community connection.
  • Collaborate with Development and program staff to support fundraising campaigns and initiatives that generate earned revenue.

Team & Operational Management

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a diverse team of communications, marketing, and event professionals.
  • Manage departmental and project-specific budgets.
  • Establish systems, tools, and processes that ensure efficiency, collaboration, and alignment across departments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field- or equivalent experience.
  • 6–10 years of progressive communications experience, ideally within a nonprofit, cultural institution, or comparable mission-driven organization of significant scale.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience, with a proven ability to build, mentor, and lead teams.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing comprehensive communications strategies.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and public speaking skills; experience advising senior leadership.
  • Strong visual sensibility and experience applying brand guidelines.
  • Familiarity with both traditional and emerging marketing platforms and tools.
  • Flexibility to attend evening and weekend events as needed.

Work Environment

Mural Arts Philadelphia operates in a fast-paced, creative, and mission-driven environment. We offer a flexible, hybrid work schedule that provides opportunities for both remote and in-office work in Philadelphia.

In order to effectively lead and engage with staff, partners, and community stakeholders, the Director of Communications and Brand Management must reside, or be willing to reside within a reasonable commuting distance from our main office. We have a 2 day in the office and 3 day remote work schedule.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary Range: $80,000–$90,000, commensurate with experience.
