Volunteer Position: Visual Performance Coordinator (Movement & Staging) 

Noteworthy Philadelphia is seeking a Visual Performance Coordinator—an ideal role for an early-career creative or recent graduate looking to develop leadership experience in movement direction, staging, and performance aesthetics. This position offers hands-on mentorship and professional development, while allowing you to help shape the artistic vision of a growing performance group. 

While we are not a fully choreographed ensemble, we embrace movement as a core part of performance storytelling. The role of movement varies from subtle, natural staging to full choreography, depending on the song, video concept, or live performance. This could mean anything from gentle, expressive body awareness techniques (ideal for someone with a yoga or movement coaching background) to fully choreographed numbers for music videos or high-energy performances. 

This role is a great fit for someone with any level of movement expertise, whether you are a dancer, choreographer, movement specialist, yoga practitioner, stage director, or multidisciplinary performer who also has vocal ability. 

 

About the Role 

The Visual Performance Coordinator will develop movement, staging, and artistic direction for Noteworthy Philadelphia’s live performances and video productions. They will collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Music Program Associate(s), Videographer, and Audio Engineer to enhance the group’s overall performance aesthetic. 

This role combines elements of movement coaching, choreography, and interdisciplinary collaboration. If you have a background in movement arts, dance, spatial performance design, or creative staging, and are excited about blending movement with vocal performance, this is the perfect opportunity to contribute your skills in a meaningful way. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Attend Sunday rehearsals (11 AM–1 PM in South Philadelphia) to guide performers on stage presence, movement, and spatial awareness. 
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Music Program Associate(s), Videographer, and Audio Engineer to develop movement and staging concepts tailored to each song, venue, and music video. 
  • Address performance challenges such as “resting a cappella face”, helping singers look expressive and engaged. 
  • Design staging and spatial formations for performances, including arches, circles, multiple rows, mic placement, and stage blocking to enhance the visual impact of live performances. 
  • Develop movement sequences or full choreography for select performances, particularly for music videos or live numbers that benefit from dynamic visual storytelling. 
  • Assist in styling and dress planning for performances, ensuring a polished and cohesive visual identity. 
  • Help scout locations for music videos and contribute to creative direction for filmed performances. 
  • Explore and develop interdisciplinary collaborations with movement-based artists, stage directors, and performance organizations. 

 

Who You Are 

We’re looking for someone who: 

  • Is an early-career performer, recent graduate, or emerging creative leader looking for hands-on experience in performance movement, staging, and artistic direction. 
  • Can sing and is interested in becoming a group member (must pass an audition). 
  • Has experience with movement, whether in dance, stage direction, physical theater, yoga, or another performance-based discipline. 
  • Understands the range of movement direction, from subtle expressiveness and presence coaching to full choreography, depending on the performance need. 
  • Wants to grow into a leadership role with guidance and professional development from experienced performing arts leaders. 
  • Is local to the Greater Philadelphia area and available for Sunday rehearsals and performances. 
  • Is excited about interdisciplinary collaboration—working with movement artists, stage designers, and other performers to create visually compelling productions. 

 

Preferred Experience 

  • Experience in stage performance, movement direction, choreography, or visual storytelling. 
  • Background working with a cappella, choral groups, or other live vocal performances is helpful but not required. 
  • Familiarity with styling, staging, or music video production planning is beneficial. 
  • Passion for working across disciplines and creating innovative performances that merge music and movement.

Additional Details 

  • Volunteer Position: This is an unpaid role, but you will hold a key leadership position in Noteworthy Philadelphia. 
  • Group Membership Required: You must pass an audition and join as a singer in the group. 
  • Flexible Attendance: If there’s no visual planning needed at a rehearsal, you are not required to attend. 

 

Trial Period 

There will be a three-month trial period to ensure mutual fit and refine expectations for the role.

Noteworthy Philadelphia is a community-based music enrichment nonprofit dedicated to using music to brighten lives, foster connections, and build community. Our members are talented vocalists in their 20s and 30s, performing across Philadelphia and beyond to create meaningful, memorable musical experiences. 

We have previously collaborated with movement artists, stage designers, and interdisciplinary performers to create visually engaging performances, and we are excited to continue expanding our artistic collaborations.

This role is ideal for an early-career creative or recent graduate eager to develop leadership experience in movement direction, staging, and performance aesthetics. You'll work closely with the executive team to enhance live performances and music videos, from expressive stage presence to full choreography for select pieces. This is a volunteer position with the opportunity to grow into a leadership role over time. Must be able to sing and join the group as a performing member.
