Position Summary    

The Assistant Director of Programs & Exhibitions is an operational leader responsible for delivering the Museum’s exhibitions and public programs on time, on budget, and at a high level of quality. Reporting to the Senior Director of Content & Interpretation, this role turns interpretive goals and strategic priorities into finished, visitor-facing experiences. 

This position is execution-focused, combining strong project management with creative problem-solving to ensure exhibitions and programs are impactful, accessible, and mission-aligned. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

Exhibitions 

  • Lead the planning and delivery of multiple temporary exhibitions annually, from concept through installation and evaluation. 
  • Ensure exhibitions are visitor-centered, content-driven, and aligned with the Museum’s interpretive framework and mission. 
  • Manage exhibition schedules, budgets, contracts, and cross-departmental coordination. 
  • Translate complex ideas about liberty and civil discourse into engaging public experiences. 
  • Evaluate exhibitions using data and visitor feedback to improve future work. 

Programs 

  • Deliver a strong portfolio of public programs—tours, talks, panels, workshops, and special events—that extend the impact of exhibitions. 
  • Design programs that encourage dialogue, participation, and critical thinking. 
  • Build and manage relationships with scholars, artists, and community partners. 
  • Oversee program logistics, budgets, and evaluation to ensure consistent quality. 

Digital and National Reach 

  • Support digital, hybrid, and online exhibitions and programs that expand the Museum’s national presence.

Leadership and Collaboration 

  • Supervise program managers and staff, setting clear expectations and ensuring accountability. 
  • Coordinate closely with Marketing, Development, Education, Operations, and Visitor Experience to deliver projects smoothly. 
  • Support fundraising by managing grant- and donor-funded deliverables and timelines. 
  • Serve as a key operational partner to the Senior Director of Content & Interpretation. 

Qualifications:  

  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. 
  • Experience translating complex ideas into accessible public content. 
  • 5+ years of experience delivering exhibitions and/or public programs in museums or cultural institutions. 
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and timelines. 
  • Commitment to the Museum’s mission and comfort working with challenging or nuanced topics.
