We are currently seeking a Museum Educator to join us at PAFA! Reporting to the Arts Education Manager, the selected individual will educate and engage museum visitors through Museum tours, educational outreach, and much, much more!

Founded in 1805, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is America's first school and museum of fine arts. Located in the center city of Philadelphia, PAFA is intimate in scale with a strong sense of community. PAFA offers several nondegree and certificate in studio art and art appreciation programs. PAFA's museum has an outstanding collection of American art, and the museum actively collects and exhibits contemporary art, including work in new media. Additionally, PAFA is home to the Brodsky Center, a print and papermaking center focused on the creation of innovative editions by contemporary artists.

THE POSITION: Museum Educator, PT

Museum Educator will be part of the Education Department working mainly with PAFA's Art Education program. Primary duties will involve support of art education programs and activities, development of museum activities and tours, outreach lessons, the creation of supplemental materials, as well as planning family engagement programs and other initiatives. This position involves traveling to outreach locations mostly in the Feltonville and Kensington neighborhoods of Philadelphia. As part of the Museum Education team, the Museum Educator will report to the Arts Education Manager and work closely with other museum educators, teaching artist, and other staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development, coordination, and scheduling art education and museum activities.
  • Participate in development of the Museum-based programs (gallery tours, art lessons, workshops, events etc.) focusing on visual literacy and 21st century skills
  • Facilitate gallery tours and art lessons in the museum
  • Participate in development of outreach programs that re-enforce common core curriculum standards, emphasize visual literacy, as well as socio-emotional development and inter-generational communication.
  • Lead arts-based workshops at schools and/or community locations for audiences of all ages and backgrounds and participate in appropriate neighborhood festivals and events
  • Assist in teacher professional development programs
  • Engage in building relationships with community organizations in partner neighborhoods
  • Participate in creation of virtual gallery spotlight talks and virtual art enrichment activities
  • Prepare lessons and age-appropriate activity samples as in person and/or virtual resources.
  • Flexible hours during the week. Some programs/events may occur on evenings and weekends
  • Other duties as needed and identified by the Art Education Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred qualified candidates should be interested in arts and culture, have experience in education or educational setting, have great public speaking skills, and have the ability to work with children and adults of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in the visual arts, humanities, education, and/or related area is required
  • 1-3 years' experience teaching/working with children/youth (preferably in the classroom or other educational setting) is required.
  • Art making skills are a plus but not required
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clear driving history.
  • Must be willing to travel to community-based locations in PAFA-provided vehicle and/or alternative transportation.
  • Familiarity and interest in Latinx culture and community are highly desirable
  • Strong communication skills, flexibility and problem-solving skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to be a team player and work collaboratively are required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and/or graphic design knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience in teaching on virtual platforms (Zoom, Google Classroom, teams, etc.), familiarity with CANVAS or other virtual Learning Management systems is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends

Working with Minors

Background checks, including Child Abuse Clearances and FBI Clearances, are required for all PAFA staff working with minors, as well as the completion of mandatory virtual staff training sessions through Vector Solutions. Applicants with valid Child Abuse History Clearances will have priority. Additional background checks may be required and will be administered by PAFA.
