Mural Arts Philadelphia

Mural Arts Philadelphia is seeking a behavioral health expert for the position of Senior Program Manager to oversee all three of the place-based storefronts in the Porch Light Department. Porch Light, a collaboration with the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS), works closely with communities to uplift public art as an expression of community resilience and a vehicle of personal and community healing. The Porch Light Department emphasizes work that is rooted in community engagement, uplifting voices of the most vulnerable and treating every person on staff and in our programs with the same value. The Senior Storefronts Manager must be able to navigate working in multiple settings with respect and humility, as Porch Light works in non-English dominant spaces, queer spaces, with those who are housing insecure, those in the midst of substance use disorder, and those diagnosed with mental health disorders.

This position, reporting to the Director of the Porch Light program, would oversee work in three storefronts that are part of the Porch Light program: Southeast by Southeast and Northeast Passage, both focused on refugee and immigrant communities, and Kensington, focused on a community affected by opioid use disorder. Now in its 10th year, Southeast by Southeast is a neighborhood hub at the Bok building that creates a supportive space through artmaking, entrepreneurship, and other classes, such as ESL and citizenship. Northeast Passage was started more recently as a response to new refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and other war-affected countries. The work in the Northeast is steered by a leadership group consisting of refugee and immigrant women from the community. The Kensington Storefront works in various iterations, one through a neighborhood office space at Community Center at Visitation, and the second through a mobile unit that allows for workshops throughout the community. The goal for the Senior Storefronts Manager at these three sites is to hire and oversee local community members and artists to develop robust, year-round programming.

This position is full time and requires being on-site, although some remote work is allowed on a weekly basis. The storefronts are located in three separate locations in the city. This position also requires a driver's license, as it includes oversight of the mobile van used in Kensington work. The person who accepts this position is expected to follow city of Philadelphia requirements for Covid vaccination.

Responsibilities include:

Develop, approve and oversee all programming and schedules for hub space sites, including working in conjunction with artists and building out the artist roster with support from Mural Arts staff.

Oversee daily operations of all three sites, including supplies, scheduling, invoicing, contracts and management of volunteers and staff with support from the Porch Light Director and Porch Light Administrator.

Monitor grant outcomes and coordinate with the Porch Light Director and Mural Arts’ Development team on budgets.

Partnership development and stewardship with community leaders, mental health resources, community-based organizations and other partners, including DBHIDS.

Oversee steering committee of women leaders for programming and community development work; oversee community advisory committees in the Southeast and Kensington.

Connect families/program participants to mental health and other resources, in conjunction with peer specialists and other DBH support.

Manage data collection in conjunction with the Porch Light Director and Porch Light Administrator.

Collaborate and coordinate with Mural Arts’ communications team on public events and announcements.

Create outlets and relationships for entrepreneurial skills and capacity-building for program participants.

Create and oversee, in conjunction with the Porch Light Director, criteria and training for staff and community members at storefronts.

Provide supervision and oversight to program staff contractors, MSW field placement students and volunteers.

Work in conjunction with the Porch Light Director to provide training opportunities in wellness, trauma, harm reduction, de-escalation, and other relevant arenas to staff and community members. The work will also include creating safety plans and wellness plans with community members and staff.

The Senior Storefronts Manager will be expected to work a few nights and weekends as program work demands.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ experience in social work, preferably with interest and/or experience in refugee/immigrant work, substance use and/or community organizing. Because this person oversees MSW interns from various local universities, at least two years working as an MSW is required. Previous experience in nonprofits and with budgets, staffing and short- and long-range planning preferred. A demonstrated ability to learn new arenas of social work will be a benefit to this applicant. A background in the arts is not required but is a plus. Commitment to the mission and values of the Mural Arts Program, a solid work ethic, excellent interpersonal skills, political savvy, and a respect for teamwork are critical to success in this position.
