Philadelphia FY27 Budget Update:
Progress Made, Advocacy Continues
  • As we shared in our June issue of CultureWire, Philadelphia City Council approved legislation to make Creative Philadelphia a permanent, Cabinet-level office—a landmark victory for the city’s creative sector. The legislation now awaits Mayor Parker’s signature before it can go before Philadelphia voters as a ballot measure this November.
  • Philadelphia’s arts funding took center stage with both a front-page story and editorial in The Philadelphia Inquirer, bringing widespread attention to the impacts of the City’s FY27 budget. The coverage highlighted the reduction of the Philadelphia Cultural Fund from $5 million to $3.5 million and a 26% ($1.45 million) cut to Mural Arts Philadelphia—decisions that will ripple across neighborhoods and cultural organizations citywide. Cultural Alliance President & CEO Patricia Wilson Aden shared that the cultural community is “disappointed and frustrated,” emphasizing the long-term consequences of reduced investment. On a positive note, the budget includes $2.5 million over the next five years to implement Philadelphia’s first Cultural Plan. The Cultural Alliance applauds The Philadelphia Inquirer for elevating this critical conversation and underscoring why sustained investment in arts and culture is essential to Philadelphia’s future.
