About Arts & Economic Prosperity 6

The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance is excited to announce the launch of Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) in the Greater Philadelphia region. AEP6 is a national study by Americans for the Arts (AFTA) of the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry. The data collection phase of the study will run from July 2022 through April 2023.

Building on its 25-year legacy, the highly regarded Arts & Economic Prosperity series will once again document, in unprecedented scope and detail, the economic power that the arts and culture wield in 395 participating communities representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Learn more about the nation study on AFTA’s AEP6 website.

In 2017, our previous report, Agenda: Prosperity, documented that the nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $4.1 billion in economic activity (spending by organizations plus the event-related spending by their audiences), which supported 55,000 jobs and generated $224.3 million in government revenue in the Greater Philadelphia region. The AEP series demonstrates to elected officials, business leaders, funders and more that an investment in the arts provides both cultural and economic benefits.

How Organizations Can Participate

In the first phase of AEP6, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance is focusing on collecting audience intercept surveys across the Greater Philadelphia region. Organizations can participate in this part of our research in two ways:

  • Include a QR code with the audience survey in program books for events, distribute flyers with QR codes at your organizations site or venue for a few hours, or surveys themselves, on seats or select seats. Organizations who agree to do this at least four events will receive a complimentary custom Prosperity report for their organization, a $150.00 value.
  • Host surveyors at their organization, who will facilitate distribution of the survey by QR code flyers and paper surveys. Organizations who agree to host surveyors will receive a 50% discount on a custom Prosperity report (@ $75.00 per organization) for their organization.

Custom organization Prosperity reports will include information about your organization’s individual economic impact, FTE jobs generated, tax revenue generated and more. The data from these reports are useful for illustrating your impact to elected officials, funders and donors, audiences and more.

In addition, all arts and culture organizations will receive a survey about their organization in early 2023.

Job Opportunity: Arts Audience Surveyors

Surveyors will help to gather key data points (how much audiences spend, why they’re attending events, demographic information etc.) from audiences at arts and culture events in Greater Philadelphia. Data collected throughout this year will play an essential role in a nationwide research effort led by Americans for the Arts. Arts and culture organizations depend on that research, which is only possible through the work of the surveyors, to inform programming, operations, and most importantly, to secure funding for the vital work that they do.

The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance will collect 1,600 audience surveys at arts and cultural organizations as part of our upcoming report – 2023 Arts, Culture and Economic Prosperity in Greater Philadelphia. Surveying will be ongoing between July 2022 and May 2023. We will be sending 2-3 person teams to approximately 40 organizations.

Surveyors will receive $30/hr for events worked  – events will take place across the five-county region, and surveyors will be expected to work 1-2 events a month at two hours per event from now to May 2023. Surveyors will be collecting responses to a brief one-page survey via paper forms or via QR codes (done on audience members’ personal devices).
