Statement on the City of Philadelphia's FY2022 Budget

The passage of the City of Philadelphia’s FY2022 Budget is a starting point for rebuilding the arts and culture sector post-pandemic.  While allocations within the budget are still being determined, we strongly believe that there will be additional restorations made to the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, beyond its initial budget of $2.5 million, and that there will be additional relief funding coming to the sector. Based on what City Council is reporting, the arts and culture sector could see as much as an additional $7 million infusion via this budget.

Although there is some uncertainty around the allocation of the budget, this is a win! And we know that this win only happened because our community’s voice was heard by City Council – loud and clear – in these past few weeks.  Arts and culture was front and center in City Council’s intense budget negotiations because of the advocacy of so many. From organizations of all sizes and disciplines to grassroots advocates to our incredible artists, Councilmembers were left with a clear message: The creative economy matters to this city, and it must be supported.

We want to especially thank Councilmembers Derek Green, Katherine Gilmore Richardson, Isaiah Thomas, Mark Squilla, Cindy Bass, Cherelle Parker, and David Oh for their willingness to engage our sector with authenticity and openness – and for their vocal support of arts and culture when it mattered.

Advocacy for arts and culture is an essential aspect of our work and the Cultural Alliance will continue to move it forward, working with the Mayor’s Office, OACCE and City Council to stabilize and secure the future of Philadelphia’s creative economy.
