PA Senate Votes to Eliminate Arts & Cultural Funding

(May 6, 2009) -  This afternoon, the Pennsylvania Senate passed its version of the FY 2010 state budget (SB 850) with a 30-20 vote.  The bill, introduced on May 4, eliminates all arts and culture grants in the state through the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC).

SPARK is a powerful and emotional short film about humans, and the profound impact that Philadelphia's museums and cultural institutions have on their and hearts and minds. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Glenn Holsten, the film features interviews with arts lovers, cultural leaders, and civic leaders including Derek Pitts, Lily Yeh, Peggy Amsterdam, and Gail Harrity. The film debuted at the American Association of Museums Conference in Philadelphia on May 1, 2009.

Museum Community Kicks Off Museum Week at Independence Visitor Center, Monday April 27th

Fifty-five area museums team up on April 27, 2009 to launch the first Museum Week, April 27-May 3, 2009. The launch event will take place on Monday, April 27th at 10am at the Independence Visitor Center on Independence Mall. It will feature a wide variety of local museums displaying samples from current exhibitions or collections. Press and the public are invited to attend. The event will also feature the debut screening of SPARK, a new short film about the impact that Philadelphia’s cultural institutions have on the hearts and minds of our community.

Meet 2009's Otis Morse Advocacy Scholars!

Over the past four years, the Otis Morse Advocacy Scholarship has supported nine Philadelphia-area residents in meeting with their elected officials and making the case for federal support of arts and culture.  The scholarship provides attendees with an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington DC for the National Arts Action Summit (sponsored by Americans for the Arts), and gives them a valuable experience in making the case for the arts on Capitol Hill with Philadelphia-area legislators.
