Monica O. Montgomery, Founder and Publisher of Arete Magazine, will share strategies for creating connections with young philanthropists and the causes they care about. Ruben J. Gonzales, Deputy Vice President for Resource Development at the National Council of La Raza, offers first-hand knowledge on the giving strategies and priorities of the Latino community and debunks outdated myths about this emerging group of philanthropists. Nicholas D. Torres, Philadelphia entrepreneur, nonprofit executive, and educator joins us as guest panelist for our afternoon group discussion on embracing diversity and inclusiveness in our philanthropic community.

Monica O. Montgomery is founder and publisher of Arete Magazine, a progressive new publication taking a fresh approach of telling the stories of cause, change, culture,community and philanthropy. Arete Magazine is inspired by Dr. King's quote "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" Monica is also a passionate and insightful speaker, connector, educator, enthusiastic volunteer and advocate for charitable causes and progressive solutions. Based in Washington D.C., her expertise is focused on community outreach, charitable giving, volunteering, social purpose and millennial engagement. 

Ruben J. Gonzales is Deputy Vice President for Resource Development at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the US. Ruben spearheaded NCLR’s “Campaign for Strong American Communities,” that raised $15MM to support nearly 300 of NCLR’s affiliate organizations. He is an expert on the role of Latinos in philanthropy. Ruben leads NCLR’s efforts to advance equality for LGBT Latinos and acts as a spokesperson to communicate the importance of this work. Under his leadership, NCLR held its first LGBT-themed workshop at its annual conference and has hosted events to recognize the contributions of prominent LGBT Latinos.

Nicholas D. Torres currently serves as CEO of Education Plus Academy Cyber Charter School, President of Education-Plus, Inc. where he works on scaling higher education models, school-based health centers and blended learning education models for dyslexic populations, and Founder of the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal and Social Innovations Lab. Mr. Torres also serves as faculty at the University of Pennsylvania's Fel's Insitute of Government. He is the recipient of the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowship, which honors emerging leaders from around the world; he was also recognized by Leadership Philadelphia as one of the 101 Philadelphia Connectors. Currently, Mr. Torres serves on the boards of the Free Library of Philadelphia, Children's Scholarship Fund, After School Partnership, and GreenTree Foundation.
