Description

Network for New Music seeks an individual of outstanding talent, musicianship, and artistic vision to serve as Artistic Director beginning with the 2018/19 season. Linda Reichert, founder and Artistic Director, under whose visionary leadership the organization has grown to become one of America’s premier contemporary music ensembles, will step down in August 2018, the end of Network’s 2017/18 season. The organization seeks to identify a new Artistic Director by the Spring of 2018 to assume responsibilities for the 2018/19 season. The position of Artistic Director provides the successful candidate with the exciting opportunity to contribute significantly to the musical and creative life of Philadelphia and the surrounding region.

Founded in 1984, Network for New Music (NNM), is dedicated to the mission of commissioning, presenting, producing and performing a great variety of new works of the highest quality by both emerging and established composers. NNM works to strengthen the new music community in the Philadelphia region and to build support for new music by engaging in artistic and institutional collaborations, as well as educational activities.

The Artistic Director is responsible for all programming decisions. The successful candidate will work closely with the organization’s part-time administrative staff of Executive Director and Media/Concert Production Associate; performing ensemble of up to 20 musicians (typically, works for up to 8 instruments are programmed during the season); conductor, and 12-member board of directors to create and produce programs which include outstanding education and outreach programs, and a concert season of three to four programs, with five to seven performances annually. The Artistic Director works closely with prominent musicians and composers to maintain the highest artistic standards in all program areas; manages within an annual budget of $200,000; actively participates in fundraising and develops relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations; prepares grant proposal applications and reports with assistance from the Executive Director; and continues to advance Network’s mission through strategic partnerships and stakeholder development, as articulated in Network’s current Strategic Plan. The Artistic Director is a direct-report to the board Chairperson.

Network for New Music has been recognized by ASCAP for Adventurous Programming and has commissioned 138 new works and performed over 500 additional new pieces over the past three decades.

The Position
The Artistic Director provides musical leadership, creative vision, and artistic direction to NNM. In collaboration with the board, staff, and volunteer advisors, the Artistic Director ensures that NNM fulfills its mission and achieves its goals for artistic excellence, education, and community engagement. The Artistic Director attracts and inspires musicians and composers of the highest quality; programs, and helps build audiences for innovative and diverse repertoire; and enhances the stature and reputation of the ensemble. The Artistic Director works collaboratively with the Board and Executive Director to maintain the financial health of the organization and to expand audience and philanthropic support for the ensemble from all sources. Opportunities to conduct and/or perform with the ensemble may be available as appropriate.

Schedule is flexible and hours vary depending on the demands of the program season. Salary is in the mid-20’s.

Requirements - Candidate Profile
Although our search is not limited to local Philadelphia-region residents, the ideal candidate will live in the Philadelphia region and thus be an active participant in the ongoing development of the organization. The following skill and experience criteria are those we seek in an ideal candidate. We encourage applicants to address these criteria in their cover letter.
• the proven ability to lead the organization to new levels of success;
• a broad knowledge of the Philadelphia, regional, national, and international new music field;
• an advanced music degree or equivalent performance/artistic experience;
• excellent writing skills including evidence of collaborations on successfully funded grant proposals, publicity materials in a variety of media, and more;
• excellent communication skills including interpersonal, public speaking, and evidence of past successes with diverse stakeholders such as volunteers, audiences, professional artists, student workshops, and more;
• the ability to multi-task and manage firm deadlines;
• at least 2-3 years successful programming experience in new music.
