Job Overview
Al-Bustan is seeking a talented and experienced video news producer to join our News team for a nine-month Video Journalism Fellowship. The fellow will produce outstanding original videos about news, arts and culture topics of relevance relevant to Arab American and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities in the Greater Philadelphia area, to be published on the Al-Bustan News site.

Responsibilities

  • Produce, shoot, and edit nine digital video stories for Al-Bustan’s News Service site over the course of 9 months. Videos typically run 2-3 minutes in duration.
  • Cover local stories, including conducting interviews and producing b-roll in the field
  • Complete videos assigned by the News Editor
  • Monitor news and identify, pitch, and pursue local news stories
  • Shoot high-quality footage on an HD (or better) video camera (DSLR, iPhone, etc.)
  • Edit videos in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects
  • Gather clean audio in the field
  • Write strong, factual scripts
  • Adhere to Al-Bustan’s editorial standards
  • Work remotely and report to the Editor of Al-Bustan News

DURATION & COMPENSATION

  • The Fellowship spans nine months from the hire date. Fellows are paid $833 per video, with a maximum compensation of $7,500 for the duration of the fellowship.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree (preferred)
  • Minimum one year producing video content for a journalism organization
  • Ability to produce, shoot and edit video news stories under deadline
  • Residency in the Philadelphia area; ability to shoot video locally and attend periodic meetings at our Philadelphia offices · Familiar with SWANA communities in Philadelphia region and passionate about stories about/for these communities
  • Skilled using video cameras and interviewing
  • Skilled video editor proficient in Premiere Pro and After Effects
  • Excellent news judgment; a clear understanding of journalistic ethics and standards, with a commitment to factual accuracy
  • Ability to produce high-quality b-roll that illustrates the documented story
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization and reside in the Philadelphia region.
  • Fluency in Arabic is a plus, but not required

Al-Bustan News is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces traditional and multimedia journalism covering issues of importance to Philadelphia's Arab and larger Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities. Al-Bustan News was founded in 2022 by our parent organization, Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture, a leading advocate for Arab culture and education. Al-Bustan believes that the voices and perspectives of the SWANA community in Philadelphia and throughout the US are often marginalized and ignored by the mainstream media and government and founded Al-Bustan News to address this issue.
