About ALAC
Founded in 1953, Allens Lane Art Center is a community arts center in Mount Airy offering theater, visual arts,
exhibitions, and a vibrant summer art camp program serving youth of all ages.
About the Role
Allens Lane Art Center is seeking energetic, dependable, and accountable Assistant Teaching Artists to join our Summer Art Camp team. This is a hands-on role in a creative, fast-paced environment. Assistant Teaching Artists help create a fun, safe, and inclusive space where young artists can thrive. In addition to supporting classroom instruction and leading groups during transitions and breaks, they are responsible for actively supervising, engaging, and caring for campers throughout the day.
Assistant Teaching Artists are expected to be attentive and present at all times. They serve as a first point of support for campers experiencing conflict or minor injury and help reinforce classroom management by encouraging focus, participation, and respectful behavior. This role requires someone ready to step in when needed—leading by example, setting a positive tone, and helping campers stay connected and on track.
Applicants should be prepared to work collaboratively with and take direction from teaching artists and senior staff, while also demonstrating good judgment and the ability to work independently in support of youth. Assistant Teaching Artists also serve as role models for Counselors-in-Training (CITs), modeling responsibility, focus, and care.
The ideal candidate is creative, enthusiastic, and steady—someone who brings both energy and responsibility to their work with young people. They understand that camp is joyful and dynamic and requires structure, attentiveness, and leadership. If you’re ready to be a dependable leader for campers and a strong support to senior staff, this could be a great fit.
