Assistant Teaching Artist -  Visual Arts & Youth Development

Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate Assistant Teaching Artist to support after-school visual arts programs for middle and high school students. This is an excellent opportunity for emerging educators, practicing artists, or recent art school graduates interested in gaining hands-on teaching experience in a creative, inclusive, and community-based setting.

As an Assistant Teaching Artist, you will collaborate with a Lead Teaching Artist to create a positive, engaging classroom where students can explore their creativity, build confidence, and connect art-making to the world around them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Lead Teaching Artist in planning and delivering engaging visual arts lessons.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment where every student feels valued and heard.
  • Assist with classroom set-up, clean-up, and preparation of art materials.
  • Provide individual support to students during instruction and creative work time.
  • Model professionalism, teamwork, and curiosity for students.
  • Track student attendance and document class activities, including photos and weekly summaries.
  • Participate in professional development sessions every other Thursday.
  • Help chaperone field trips and maintain strong relationships with school and site partners.

What We’re Looking For

  • Genuine enthusiasm for working with young people and supporting their artistic and personal growth.
  • Experience or strong interest in visual arts education (1–2 years preferred).
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the classroom.
  • Ability to adapt to dynamic learning environments and communicate effectively with colleagues and students.
  • Comfort working in multicultural, multilingual, and LGBTQ+ inclusive spaces.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Current Pennsylvania Child Abuse, Criminal Background, and FBI clearances (or willingness to obtain upon an offer of employment).

Additional Attributes

  • Experience leading collaborative public art or mural-making projects.
  • Strong mentorship mindset—able to guide an assistant teaching artist and inspire students.
  • Creative problem-solver with the flexibility to adapt to evolving project goals.
  • Interest in connecting art education with community engagement, storytelling, and social justice.

Why Join Us

  • Work within a nationally recognized arts organization that values both artistic excellence and social impact.
  • Lead students through creative projects that beautify Philadelphia and celebrate community stories.
  • Join a collaborative network of artists, educators, and changemakers.
  • Gain professional growth through bi-weekly development sessions and project showcases.
