RYERSS MUSEUM PUBLIC LIBRARIAN
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This part-time Library position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Ryerss Museum and Library, located within an historic house museum operated through Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. The is not a seasonal position but is offered as a year around position. This position is responsible for assisting patrons of the library; shelving, arranging, sorting, dispatching and filing of library materials; evaluation of library materials, coordination of the McNaughton Book Lending Program, and assists with staffing of Ryerss Museum and Library special events and programming as needed.
The Librarian is responsible for all day-to-day operations, including opening and closing facility.
Instructs patrons in the use of the library's facilities; explains general arrangement and resources of the library and use of library facilities; assists readers to locate, select and check out books; recommends reading materials and general assists patrons and handles all circulation issues.
Performs a variety of duties in connection with shelving, arrangement, sorting, dispatching and filing of library materials.
Reviews and evaluates books, periodicals, pamphlets and electronic resources; makes recommendations for possible purchase by the library system; chooses books and materials for inclusion in collections.
Consults standard codes and classification systems to catalog new books; assigns subject heading to new books; develops and/or refines records.
Coordinates McNaughton Book Lending Program
Gives talks before school and community groups on services and facilities offered by the library; conducts children's story hours; presents book talks and reviews for all ages.
Removes worn and obsolete materials from collections.
Selects and prepares materials for exhibits and displays.
Staff community events that occur at the Ryerss Museum and Library and works closely with museum staff to coordinate community outreach and special events that occur on-site.
Assists museum staff periodically with tours and coordinates with building maintenance and cleaning staff
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
The philosophy and objectives of public library service and relationships to the community
The principles, practices, objectives and techniques of library science
Reference and readers advisory service and techniques
The methods for disseminating information concerning public library objectives
The use of standard book classification systems
Library materials, publishers and periodicals
Computer literacy to include Microsoft Office Suite and Access database applications
Coordinate social media posts as necessary
ABILITY TO:
Express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
Work independently and take initiative
Work on detailed projects with good organizational skills
Have flexible work hours and be willing to work 10-4 Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday or some combination thereof for at least 24 hours per month. You will NOT be required to work every weekend each month. Occasional evening hours 1-3 times per year.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other museum and library staff, professional associates, and the general public.
Learn the organization and resources of the library system
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates general knowledge and understanding of basic library operations that includes standard Library of Congress Classification System, national cataloging rules and other pertinent standard library procedures and systems. Ideally candidates will possess a degree from an accredited school of library science, which included course work in library services for children.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Ability to bend, stoop, lift, and carry materials weighing up to 40lbs.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is an hourly position that currently pays $16/hr. There are no benefits offered.
