The Retail Operations Manager ensures the smooth, behind-the-scenes functioning of the Museum Store in support of a positive visitor experience. This role focuses on operational excellence—inventory, systems, logistics, and daily readiness—allowing frontline staff to focus on sales, service, and engagement. This position reports the Museum Store Manager.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead the operational aspects of the Museum’s store and stockroom, including stock management, inbound/outbound functions, technical systems, and shipping
Manage inventory receiving, checking for order discrepancies, counts, and quality, entering data to receive purchase orders, and merchandise handling with price stickering, boxing, assembly, tagging, and put away
Maintain accurate stock records, allocate merchandise to the store location, and monitor inventory levels. Perform cycle counts and an annual physical inventory
Ensure the stockroom is organized, follows an accurate merchandise locator system, and employs FIFO procedures and expiration date management for perishable items
Deliver product to store and assist with merchandising resets and seasonal transitions
Oversee backend systems (Shopify POS and ecommerce, shipping carriers) and liaise with Visitor Engagement and Museum Operations teams as required
Manage ecommerce order fulfillment and wholesale shipments
Pick, pack, and ship online customer orders and pick up in store requests
Provide reporting on operational metrics
Order shipping supplies, store bags and tissue, retail supplies and equipment
Ensure the store environment is prepared, stocked, and visitor-ready
Support seamless service delivery during peak visitation
Reinforces the Museum’s standards of professionalism and care
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
2–4 years of retail operations, warehouse, or inventory management experience
Experience with receiving procedures, order fulfillment, and inventory maintenance, including taking physical inventory
Experience with multiple shipping carriers (UPS, FedEx, USPS)
Proficiency with POS systems and ecommerce platforms (Shopify preferred). Microsoft Excel skills desirable
Ability to work onsite at the Museum days, weekends, and occasional evenings for special events
Ability to bend, reach, stand for long periods, and lift or carry weights up to 50+ pounds
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a visitor-facing environment
Comfort working in both public and back-of-house settings
This position is full-time and on site. The salary is $50,000 annually.
