Project 440 Inc
Project 440 is a youth-driven student first community-based organization. At Project 440, we meet young people where they are—welcoming all youth regardless of their interests. Our career-connected creative learning programs support students in building a toolkit of essential 21st-century skills like critical thinking, empathy, and project management.
Whether they’re into music, visual arts, or any other artistic pursuits, our students learn how to apply their creativity to chart their own path and make a positive impact in their communities. Our free afterschool programs for Philadelphia high school students include Doing Good, Instruments for Success, and the Youth Advocacy Council.
Students develop an entrepreneurial mindset, gain leadership and service skills, learn about the college admissions process and career opportunities, and attain a toolkit of 21st century skills that serve them throughout their lives, whatever path they choose.
ABOUT DOING GOOD
Doing Good is an intensive twelve-week afterschool program that teaches leadership and service and fosters an entrepreneurial mindset. Students develop communication and collaboration skills and learn budgeting, event planning, project management and more. In the second six weeks of the program, participants work in teams to apply these skills to create and implement a final arts-focused service-learning project.
Each team receives funding of up to $500 to implement their project. After the projects have been completed, each group gives a project presentation at the Doing Good graduation attended by family, friends, and community members. Each student receives a stipend of up to $825 at the conclusion of the program.
OUR YOUNG PEOPLE
Musicians and non-musicians alike often tell us, “I wish Project 440 had existed when I was in school.” We open our doors to all Philadelphia high school students regardless of their musical skill level, interests, or prior experience. This approach undergirds our goal to remove barriers to participation in the arts.
Our students’ musical and artistic interests, knowledge, and experiences are varied and diverse. Some perform in a school or other youth ensemble, some in their own groups, others are composers and songwriters, and some students primarily have other artistic interests and experiences but value music as an outlet to nurture their well-being, creative pursuits and curiosity.
DOING GOOD TEACHING MENTOR
Responsibilities
The Doing Good Teaching Mentor guides and leads students at each stage of the Doing Good program. The teaching Mentor ensures all students meet attendance and program requirements including the implementation and completion of their group’s service-learning project. You will work as part of a team that includes co-teachers and the Manager of Programs and Student engagement on preparing and executing program content and lesson plans. A minimum of two professional development workshops will be required each school year. (Teaching Mentors are compensated for professional development activities).
