Part-Time Film Projectionist
BMFI is seeking a skilled and reliable Part-Time Film Projectionist to join our theater operations team. Reporting to the Director of Theater Operations, the Film Projectionist ensures the highest presentation standards for both film and digital screenings. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with 35mm, 70mm, and digital cinema systems, strong technical and troubleshooting skills, and a passion for preserving the art of theatrical exhibition.
MISSION STATEMENT
Bryn Mawr Film Institute (BMFI) is a nonprofit, member-supported motion picture theater and film education center located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in the western suburbs of Philadelphia. BMFI is dedicated to promoting shared experiences that entertain, engage, and educate audiences through a diverse range of independent-minded films, a full curriculum of courses, and an extensive program of special events. BMFI builds community through film culture, while maintaining strong connections to its historic venue’s cinematic past.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain 35mm and 70mm film projectors and digital cinema projectors (DCP) during public screenings and special events.
- Prepare, inspect, and project film prints in accordance with archival and preservation standards.
- Manage and execute the projection of digital content, including DCPs, Blu-rays, and other media formats.
- Perform basic troubleshooting of projection, sound, and automation systems to ensure seamless presentations.
- Work collaboratively with BMFI’s programming, education, and events teams to support screenings and live programs.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe projection booth environment.
- Ensure adherence to BMFI’s technical and aesthetic presentation standards.
Qualifications:
- Experience operating both film and digital projection equipment in a professional setting.
- Proficiency with 35mm projection required (changeover experience preferred).
- Experience with 70mm projection helpful but not required.
- Familiarity with various video formats (QuickTime, Blu-ray, etc.) and sound systems.
- Strong attention to detail and technical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, efficiently, and calmly under time constraints.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience handling archival prints and understanding film preservation standards.
- Familiarity with audio calibration and projection booth maintenance.
- Appreciation for independent, repertory, and classic cinema.
