A Book a Day (ABaD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in West Philadelphia. ABaD engages the arts to expand literacy and promote interdisciplinary and life-long learning among children in underserved and diverse communities. Since its founding in 2014, ABaD has distributed more than 10,000 books to young readers throughout Philadelphia (with a focus on West and Southwest Philadelphia) through donations to Title I public school libraries, community centers, health facilities, and more. Funded by partnerships, grants, and donations, all ABaD programs are free to children and their families. In addition to book donations, ABaD develops and implements innovative programs aimed at increasing children’s access to literacy by lifting underrepresented and/or new voices and supports the work of caregivers, educators, and literacy organizations directly and through resources found on its website.  

A Book a Day is looking for an Assistant Director, who will play a central role within the organization, directly supporting the Executive Director in the day-to-day running of ABaD. This includes assisting the Executive Director in managing and leading internal teams to ensure ABaD’s financial stability and growth, as well as implementing the strategic plan, articulating the organizational vision, and consistently upholding ABaD’s values.

The Assistant Director will be primarily responsible for the following: 

  • Maintaining timely and effective internal and external communication
  • Managing book donations, including keeping inventory and plating books
  • Organizing, prepping, and staffing events 
  • Developing and overseeing fundraising activities
  • Promoting ABaD’s mission, vision, and values
     

The position pays between $18 and $25 per hour (depending on experience) for 15-20 hour work week. The successful candidate will be available during the week and on weekends, as needed. ABaD is looking for a collaborative team player who is:

  • Punctual and responsible 
  • An excellent writer and communicator
  • Comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people, including coordinating the work of volunteers and interns
  • Balances professionalism with a sense of humor in solving problems
     

Qualifications

  • Experience in administrative/clerical/nonprofit management preferred
  • Tech savvy and familiarity with WordPress and social media platforms
  • Experience using Google Suite and Word 
  • Knowledgeable in Square and basic accounting practices
  • Background in education or social work is desirable
  • College degree, driver’s license, and access to an automobile a plus
     

Duties (synchronously with the major functions listed above)

  • Maintaining the ABaD calendar
  • Scheduling meetings 
  • Responding to email and sending out other correspondence
  • Updating the website
  • Keeping track of inventory (books and other materials)
  • Transporting book donations and other materials to local schools and organizations
  • Managing in-person staffing at events
  • Other duties as required. These may involve lifting and carrying boxes, liaising with partners regarding events, or driving a vehicle.

Education Level:
